Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 22, 2026
Dubnative is a browser extension that translates a video's captions and reads them aloud in another language. This policy explains what information the extension and the Dubnative service handle, why, who else sees it and for how long. It covers the Dubnative extension, the API it talks to (api.dubnative.com) and this website.
1. What stays on your device
These are stored by the extension in your browser and are never sent to us:
- Settings such as your language, voice, display mode and volume. If Chrome sync is on, Chrome syncs them between your own browsers through your Google account, as it does for any extension.
- Your pronunciation list (names and terms you teach Dubnative to say).
- Translations of videos you've watched, so a video you reopen doesn't need translating again.
- An installation ID: a random code created when you install the extension. It identifies the installation, not you, and is the only identifier we receive (see below).
Removing the extension deletes all of this.
2. What is sent to Dubnative, and why
When you dub a video with Dubnative's AI translation or AI voices, the extension sends the following to our API:
| Data | Why |
|---|---|
| The caption sentences being translated, how long each one is on screen, up to three sentences before them, the video's title, and the source and target language | To translate the captions so they make sense in context and fit the time available |
| The translated sentence to be spoken and the voice you chose | To generate the spoken audio |
| Your installation ID | To apply the daily and monthly free limits, or the limits of your plan |
| A founding member invite code, if you enter one | To check it and give your installation the plan it grants |
| Your IP address, which every internet request carries | To stop abuse, such as many installations on one connection multiplying the free limit. We store it only as a salted one-way hash, never as the address itself |
We do not receive the video itself, its audio, the address of the page, your browsing history, your Google account, or anything you type. The extension only reads captions on pages where it runs: YouTube, and any other site you explicitly turn it on for.
If you choose a voice installed on your computer, or Dubnative uses your browser's built-in translator (for example after you reach a limit), that work happens through your browser and operating system, and nothing is sent to us for it. Some system voices, such as the “Google” voices in Chrome, are provided over the internet by your browser vendor under their own privacy terms.
3. What we keep, and for how long
| What | Contains | Kept for |
|---|---|---|
| Usage counters | Installation ID or hashed IP, the day or month, and how much was used (minutes of video, characters of speech) | Daily counters 35 days; monthly counters 13 months. Deleted automatically |
| Plan records | Installation ID, its plan and end date, and which invite code it used | Until 35 days after the plan ends. Deleted automatically |
| Shared translation and audio cache | Translated caption text and generated audio, filed under a fingerprint of the text. Nothing in it says who asked for it | As long as it is useful, so the same video isn't translated twice. It cannot be linked back to you |
| Service logs | Counts and timings (for example “translated 20 sentences, 600 tokens”) and error details, without caption text. Our hosting provider also records request details such as the IP address | Up to 7 days |
4. Who else processes it
We use these service providers. They process data on our behalf to provide the service, under business terms that don't allow them to use it for their own purposes, such as training their models. They receive the caption text needed for the task, but never your installation ID or IP address.
- Cloudflare hosts the API, the cache, the usage database and this website. The API runs in the United States.
- Anthropic (Claude) translates the caption sentences and video title.
- Google Cloud Text-to-Speech turns translated sentences into speech.
We don't sell personal information, share it for advertising, or use it for anything other than running Dubnative. We may disclose information if the law requires it.
5. Extension permissions
- Access to youtube.com: to read the captions of the video you are watching and show the Dubnative player controls.
- Other sites (optional): only requested when you turn Dubnative on for a site from its menu, and only used on that site.
- Storage and unlimited storage: to keep the settings, pronunciation list and translations described in section 1.
- Text-to-speech: to speak with voices installed on your computer.
- Scripting and active tab: to start Dubnative on a site you turned it on for.
6. This website
dubnative.com uses no cookies, analytics, ads or third-party scripts and fonts. If you close the suggestion to view the home page in your language, your browser remembers that choice locally; nothing is sent to us. Cloudflare, which serves the site, processes standard request information such as your IP address to deliver and protect it.
7. Your choices and rights
You can stop sending anything to Dubnative at any time by choosing a voice installed on your computer, turning Dubnative off, or removing the extension. Because we don't know who you are, the data we hold is limited to the counters above, which expire on their own. Depending on where you live (for example in the EU, UK or California), you may have the right to ask about, correct or delete personal information, or to object to its use. To make a request or ask a question, email privacy@dubnative.com. Including your installation ID helps us find the counters that belong to it.
The legal basis for the processing described here is our legitimate interest in providing the service you asked for and protecting it from abuse.
8. Children
Dubnative is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
9. Founding members and paid plans
During the beta, a founding member invite code gives an installation the Pro plan for free until the date shown in the extension. Redeeming a code links it to your installation ID, and nothing else about you.
Paid plans are not available yet. Payments will be handled by Polar, which acts as the merchant of record. We will update this policy before collecting any information for paid plans.
10. Changes
If we change what we collect or how we use it, we will update this page and the date above before the change takes effect, and announce significant changes in the extension.
